Hyundai's Electrified Genesis GV70 Will be Its First EV Manufactured in the US

Hyundai will begin producing EVs in the United States this year with the electrified Genesis GV70 crossover model, the firm stated in a video seen by Automotive News at the New York Automotive Forum. It is part of a larger plan to invest $7.4 billion in the United States by 2025 to develop an EV family and smart transportation technologies.

At a ceremony with Alabama Governor Kay Ivey, Hyundai said that it would begin electrified manufacturing at its Montgomery, Alabama, factory in October with the Santa Fe Hybrid. It will initially invest $300 million, generating 200 new employment at the site (its only manufacturing facility in the US). On the Montgomery assembly line, the firm now produces the Elantra car, the Santa Fe and Tucson SUVs, and the Santa Cruz sport adventure vehicle.

The Genesis GV70 EV was unveiled surreptitiously at the Guangzhou Auto Show in China late last year. The business has yet to reveal US specifications, which might explain why the GV70 EV was not mentioned at all in the news announcement. According to the Korean testing cycle, the Korean version will include an 800-volt charging system and a 77.4 kWh battery range of roughly 400 km (247 miles).

It also has two electric motors that provide 482 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque, significantly greater than the GV70's ICE version. According to photographs, the inside will be equivalent to the existing gas-powered GV70's in terms of elegance and technology.

It took Hyundai some time to set US EV production schedules, and it follows similar statements from Toyota and Volkswagen. All three firms, which run non-union operations in the United States, have spoken out against the Biden administration's intention to grant further tax breaks to unionized automakers. Simultaneously, Hyundai's unionized employees in Korea want the corporation to increase domestic EV production rather than invest abroad. All of this must be balanced against US vehicle import levies of 2.5 percent for automobiles and 25 percent for trucks and SUVs.
