In 8K Video Playback Testing, the Intel Arc A770 Outperforms the Nvidia RTX 4090.

Intel's Arc GPUs have finally arrived, and the early reaction has been... mixed. The general view appears to be that the flagship Arc A770 16GB is a good mainstream gaming graphics card with a good price-to-performance ratio, but current driver and power consumption concerns indicate that the Arc designs need some work.

Video encoding performance has received nearly unanimously good feedback. For the uninitiated, video playback (particularly, high-resolution video) need a dedicated hardware unit on the GPU, the performance of which is independent of the card's total power.

This is how the $349 Arc A770 managed to outperform the $1,599 (if you're lucky) RTX 4090 in a benchmark test. The inventor of the CapFrameX capture and analysis program has published the results of an AV1 video encoding performance comparison amongst four current GPUs, with Intel's lowly A770 coming out on top.

The RTX 4090, the previous-generation RTX 3090, and AMD's RX 6800 XT were also evaluated. The test entailed decoding a movie from YouTube - Japan in 8K 60fps - into 8K and 4K formats in the Google Chrome browser. To pass the test, a GPU must execute the video at a steady average of 60 frames per second.

Only the Arc A770 was able to achieve a flawless 60fps average at 4K and 59.9fps at 8K, as seen by the numbers above. Sure, the RTX GPUs aren't far behind, reaching 59.9fps at 4K, but at 8K resolution, they drop off substantially, with much lower frame rates in the bottom percentiles as well. The poor Radeon RX 6800 XT is utterly blown away, but AMD has long touted it as a gaming GPU.
