Oracle VirtualBox Users Can Now Use Windows 11

Oracle VirtualBox customers may now utilize Windows 11 after the firm fixed a known problem that caused virtual machine failures when Hyper-V or the Windows Hypervisor was installed.

Because of the failures, Microsoft implemented precautions for Windows 11, effectively barring users from updating. Microsoft announced the removal of the protections after Oracle resolved the concerns.

"Oracle has fixed this problem in VirtualBox 6.1.28 and later," Microsoft stated. "To remove the safeguard hold on your device, you must update to VirtualBox 6.1.28 or later."

On the other hand, virtual desktop users will have to wait a bit longer to get their hands on the newest version of Microsoft's operating system.

"Please keep in mind that if no other protections impact your device, it may take up to 48 hours until the upgrade to Windows 11, version 21H2, is made available," the statement states.

It was also claimed that certain remote desktop users might have been barred from upgrading to Windows 11, even if they had not installed VirtualBox. According to reports, those customers had a program based on VirtualBox or included with VirtualBox as part of their installation.

"If you utilize or build VMs or system images, you may need to upgrade or delete them to remove this safety hold," the business added.

While Oracle worked on a fix, a workaround enabled VirtualBox users to continue using Windows 11. By going via the TPM on a host system, VirtualBox might meet Windows 11 standards without delivering a full-fledged virtual TPM.

Before deleting the protections for VirtualBox users, Microsoft also deleted some for users of Intel Smart Sound Technology drivers and programs that used non-ASCII characters in their registry values.
