Ukrainian Refugees Receive Shelter and Support from Tinder Users

More than 2.5 million people have fled Ukraine since Russia's incursion began, making it Europe's biggest refugee crisis since World War II. To find safety in neighboring countries such as Romania, some Ukrainian migrants have resorted to an unexpected source of assistance: Tinder.

The New York Times tells the story of Anastasia Tischchenko, one such person. When she and her companion Natalia Masechko fled their hometown of Ivano-Frankivsk, a city of about 230,000 people in western Ukraine, south of Lviv, they reported their situation on the dating app.

"I believe there are many honest individuals in the world, and some of them are on Tinder," Tischchenko told The New York Times. She was correct. Several others swiped right on her profile to offer assistance, including one guy who got Tishchenko and Masechko in touch with a friend of a friend of a friend who discovered a monastery for the two to stay in a while in the Siret, a Romanian city on Ukraine's southern border. "It was motivating," she remarked. Tischchenko returned to Poland after their time in the Siret, but her companion Masechko stayed in Romania to assist the next wave of migrants.

Like the war itself, the refugee situation has reached a tipping point in recent days. Officials in Poland's two main cities, Warsaw and Krakow, indicated on Friday that they were trying to absorb all of the people who had arrived as a result of the violence. Warsaw Mayor Rafa Trzaskowski cautioned that the "situation is becoming increasingly tough by the day." UN High Commissioner for Refugees states, as many as 4 million people may evacuate Ukraine due to the conflict.
